The ASOI is delighted to host its 7th Annual Conference and AGM on 17 and 18 May 2019.
On Friday 17 May, leading national and international experts will address patient advocacy and approaches to reduce obesity stigma. Speakers come from a range of backgrounds and disciplines, including clinical, social science, media and patients. During the afternoon we will host a panel discussion on how to promote more positive media imagery and representation in relation to obesity.
The following day, Saturday 18 May we will celebrate European Obesity Day which brings people together to raise awareness and increase knowledge about obesity and the many other diseases on which it impacts. Together, we can help to improve the prevention and treatment of obesity, ultimately improving the health and quality of life of those who are living with it. This half-day event will be led by our patient representatives, and will involve a practically focused event for people living with obesity and their families. It will include presentations from patient representatives and health care professionals covering the role of genetics in determining body weight, family-based approaches to healthy weight management (food, sleep & activity), the unknowns of living with obesity, and approaches to reduce obesity stigma.
Speakers:
This event includes a stellar line-up of national and international speakers including Dr Arya Sharma; Dr Oli Williams; Dr Ximena Salas Ramos; June Shannon; Solveig Sigurdardottir. More to be announced! The full speaker programme will be available shortly.
Who is this event for?
Health and social care professionals, including GPs, dietitians, nurses, nutritionists, physicians, physiotherapists, psychologists; people living with obesity; media professionals; those working with people with obesity; anyone with an interest in obesity, patient involvement, and/or addressing stigma.
The inclusion of speakers from the Canadian Obesity Network who have specific expertise in how to deliver non-stigmatising public health campaigns will be of particular interest to groups such as safefood, the Irish Heart Foundation, Healthy Ireland, Pobal and Get Ireland Active who run public health campaigns in Ireland.
People living with obesity and their families are welcome and encouraged to attend either or both days – particularly the half-day event on Saturday 18 May – with only a nominal fee charged.
